From the Michigan Society of American Foresters, welcome to the Upper Peninsula Forestry Auto Tour!
Through this self-guided auto tour, we hope to help you enjoy some of what the Upper Peninsula (UP) of Michigan has to offer and to learn more about our great forest resources. This tour is designed to guide you through this vast land of changing and actively managed terrain and to assist the traveler in learning about our beautiful and productive forests.
As you travel the roadways of the Upper Peninsula, you will see road signs with our distinctive green shield and a number that corresponds to a forest type on the map included in the app.
Want to learn more about that forest type? The app contains descriptions of each forest type that we, as foresters in the U.P., manage for timber, recreation and ecological values. Take a moment as you drive by a site to ponder the wonderful visual, economic, and recreational value of timberland, not only in the Upper Peninsula, but worldwide.
Want to see a picture of the various forest types found in the Upper Peninsula? Click on the descriptions or the link at the bottom of the app to see pictures depicting each of these forest types.
If you would like a brochure which contains much of the information contained in this app, visit any of the 14 Michigan Department of Transportation Welcome Centers, such as the one located on the north end of the Mackinac Bridge, as well as other brochure outlets.
The Upper Peninsula Forestry Auto Tour is just one of the many projects supported by the Michigan Society of American Foresters (http://www.michigansaf.org/) to promote the understanding and appreciation of Michigan’s forests.
